Elfi von Dassanowsky Biography (Operatic singer, pianist, and music educator) (1924–2007)
Elfriede "Elfi" von Dassanowsky Story:Operatic singer, pianist, and music educator, born in Vienna, Austria on February 2, 1924. At age 15, she was then the youngest female student admitted to the Vienna Academy of Music and Art. Her anti-fascist stance halted her career, and she did not make her debut until 1946, when she became known as a pianist and a mezzo-soprano operatic singer.
To promote the rebuilding of democratic cultural institutions in post-war Austria and Germany, she directed and performed in concerts for the Allied High Command (19479), founded new musical theatre ensembles in Vienna, and was instrumental in the revival of German-language cinema, founding Belvedere Film Productions in 1946. She moved to the USA in 1955, where she was a vocal coach in the film world of the 1960s, and became a US citizen in 1962. She has since come to be recognized as a leading figure of post-war European culture. On October 2, 2007, Elfi Dassanowsky died in Los Angeles of heart failure.
